The Christmas Dilemma

December 25, 2013

So it’s the most wonderful time of the year, jingle bells, yadda, yadda, yadda… It may not sound like it but I do actually love Christmas time. The smell of candied almonds and Glühwein at the Christmas markets, decorating our apartment with a bit of kitsch, silly Christmas sweaters and most of all, the light-hearted feeling of togetherness that the festive season brings are all things I appreciate about the Winter holidays. Presents aren’t bad either but I think I enjoy the giving even more than receiving, especially this year with a little person involved!

Christmas is however also a bit of a dilemma for me, or more where and how to spend Christmas. The first complication is of course the geographical one: Berlin, Münster or England? A second layer of added complexity comes with a partner who works shifts and isn’t allowed to take holiday in December. Man, that truly sucks balls in the highest! Thus, the dilemma is always: Do we spend Christmas together as a family in Berlin, or do we spend it apart?

After being away with the Boy in the U.K. last year, leaving Papa behind to fend for himself (and being heavily criticised for that in some quarters), we chose to take it easy and stay in Berlin with no visitors and no obligations. I really needed a bit of down-time this year, what with being knocked up and all. However, sitting here on the evening of Christmas day, Boy in bed, Man away to nightshift, I can’t help but miss my family and the 30-or-so Christmasses I spent with them.

Perhaps in the long term we’ll find a solution but until then, I guess we need to continue to forge our own traditions. Or find H a new job 😉
