Face Book

October 1, 2011

Facebook: It’s the place to be. Anyone who’s anyone’s on it- brands, businesses, products, people. The site’s ‘invasion’ of our privacy is debated far and wide and Heaven forbid if it ever deigns to make any changes! Change is evil and must be shunned by all!

Not-so-recently, Facebook introduced a kindof face recognition feature that allows you to automatically tag your friends in photos.  There’s been a bit of a furore as a result (you can adjust your settings and politely decline this functionality, btw) but I was thinking of something different: Worldwide, there are more than 800 million active users on Facebook. If Facebook has such a large database of faces, surely this can be used by police forces to identify criminals, for example the little fuckers setting shit on fire in this Summer’s UK riots?

I don’t claim to be the first person in the world to have this thought and I also am not saying it’s *the right thing to do* but using Facebook for the forces of good, who’da thunk?

I came from Working Berlin Mum’s blog – had to click on over to yours after seeing the name!
Facebook used for the forces of good?! Can’t see that happening any time soon 😉 (Although I still maintain that 90% of people’s problems with Facebook are their own fault… creating a public event then wondering why people try to attend it. Helllooo?)
